HIV/AIDS has ravaged large populations in Sub-Saharan Africa. The disease has left thousands of women and children as widows and orphans. One in every ten Kenyans is HIV positive. There are over 1 million HIV positive people in Kenya while thousands have died of AIDS. Kenya is one of the Developing countries where about half of the population lives on less than one dollar a day. Most homes are run by single mothers who are mostly unemployed. There are a number of homes that are run by orphaned children. AIDS was declared a national disaster in Kenya several years ago. Though the Kenya government has come up with large scale national programs to address the disease, most poor people in the rural areas still don’t have access to such services. HIV/AIDS also has a cultural dimension; therefore there is a need for local community based organizations that understands the cultural dynamics that fuel the spread of AIDS. The contribution of WOHI is a drop in the ocean in light of the magnitude of the problem but it is a highly valuable contribution to the recipients who would otherwise have borne the problem entirely on their own.
