WOHI was founded by Zipporah Nashelu Kamau in 2002 when she observed a growing number of women rendered widows by HIV/AIDS in her home town of Kiserian, Kenya. Kamau was inspired by the lives of women such as Zipporah Ngatia, one of the founding directors who succumbed to aids in 2004. The other founding Directors are Pastor John S. Kipeen and Nathaniel Kamau. WOHI has partners in the USA specifically Angela Yoder and her family who founded a sister organization in the USA, Well of Hope International America. WOHI has received support from families and well wishers from the USA through this network.
